World Day Against Pain: I have chronic pain and I can't sleep, what do I do?
The impact of World Day for Pain
Carmen's desperate search on World Day Against Pain
The title of our new blog post, NESA® life, is Carmen's desperate search on the internet for a solution to her chronic pain and insomnia problem. She could be Carmen (fictitious name) or she could be Juan, Carlos or María. On World Day Against Pain, we would like to remind you that this is a public health problem that affects one in five people in the world. Most people have felt pain at some time in their lives, whether from a fall, illness or discomfort. It gets worse when the pain becomes chronic and prevents you from carrying out your daily routines, thus reducing your quality of life.
Our protagonist was a passionate sportswoman, a lover of mountain walks and outdoor adventures. But one day, a back injury changed everything. What at first seemed like a passing discomfort turned into a nightmare of constant pain that haunted her day and night.
It wasn't long before Carmen discovered that the pain was not just a physical condition. The discomfort became generalised, affecting many aspects of her life. Her mood began to wane and, consequently, so did her personal relationships. But the most devastating was yet to come, the inability to sleep. Nights became her most dreaded enemy. While the world slept, she lay awake fighting an insomnia that had become her shadow.
Carmen dreaded the time to go to sleep, because she knew that for her, the night would bring only anguish and physical and mental exhaustion.
After months of not being in control of her life, she decided to seek professional help and began researching pain management and insomnia. Gradually, he managed to develop a series of strategies that helped him in his recovery.
We would like to recall that the World Health Organisation has called for chronic pain to be considered a disease and for pain relief to be listed as a human right on World Day Against Pain.
Carmen's story, although fictional, is the story of thousands of people. To share her testimony on such an important day is to build a network of support for all those people whose physical and emotional wellbeing is currently being undermined by chronic pain and insomnia on World Day Against Pain.
Carmen is an invented patient, but the clinical cases of Antonia, Pilar and Evaristo are real. We invite you to learn more about their stories on #WorldPainDay.
